Eco-responsible sneakers: reduce your carbon footprint
Choosing eco-responsible sneakers is not just about looking at their style. It also means understanding what really goes into making them: the materials used, their durability, their carbon impact and their capacity to be worn for a long time.
At FAGUO, every pair is designed to reduce its environmental impact while remaining suited to your everyday life. From recycled materials to transparency on CO2 emissions, our men's and women's sneakers take a more responsible approach to fashion.
Whether you're looking for men's sneakers or women's sneakers, the goal remains the same: offering durable, comfortable models made with low-impact materials.
Why opt for eco-responsible low-top sneakers?
An eco-responsible sneaker stands out through several concrete criteria: carbon output during manufacturing, the use of recycled materials, the country of manufacture, transport of components, consideration of the product's end of life and transparent communication. Where a classic sneaker often relies on virgin petrochemical materials, a more responsible pair seeks to limit the use of new resources. This choice also responds to a desire to consume better, with sneakers that are part of an eco-responsible approach.
The idea is not to produce sneakers that are merely "greener" in appearance, but to design sneakers made to be worn every day without compromise on style. The result: a versatile pair you keep for longer, a purchase that makes sense and fits naturally into a more considered consumption pattern.
Materials: expertise at the heart of our sneakers
Recycled polyester to reduce plastic production
The majority of FAGUO canvas sneakers use recycled materials to construct the upper of the shoe with eco-responsibility.
Most of the time, where possible, we incorporate a high proportion of recycled cotton (between 20% and 60%) alongside raw cotton, as the latter is highly resource-intensive, particularly in terms of water, and significantly increases the carbon footprint of the product.
When synthetic material is necessary, recycled polyester is chosen, particularly from plastic bottles transformed into textile fibres. This material helps limit the use of virgin polyester while retaining strength and lightness.
Today, 80% of FAGUO pieces are made from recycled materials. This choice reduces the carbon impact from the very start of the product design process, without compromising on comfort or style.
The sole in 80% natural and 20% recycled rubber
The sole plays an essential role in the durability of a sneaker, and some plastic bottles are repurposed into textile fibres to complement the use of natural materials. FAGUO models feature a composition blending natural rubber and recycled rubber to improve wear resistance while limiting the use of virgin materials. This choice also helps reduce pollution linked to waste and the production of new resources.
This combination also brings greater everyday comfort through improved flexibility and good cushioning. Some soles also incorporate recycled foam to further extend the impact-reduction logic.
Leather, organic cotton and cork
80% of leathers in the world are chrome-tanned. Some sneakers are made with leather or suede sourced from audited workshops to guarantee better manufacturing practices.
Eco-responsible sneakers use organic cotton and natural rubber. The laces can be made from organic cotton, and several models feature a cork insole — a material derived from the earth that is naturally breathable and comfortable.
Some references also draw inspiration from innovations such as grape marc, while chrome-free tanning better meets current expectations. This choice is often part of a French or European know-how, with production in selected workshops and tighter control over the risk linked to chrome VI.
The packaging is also designed to limit its impact through recycled and recyclable materials. Every component counts in the design of a more responsible sneaker.
How do you choose your eco-responsible sneakers?
To choose a pair of eco-responsible sneakers, start by looking at the materials used. A transparent brand clearly indicates the composition of its products, the origin of the materials and the recycled elements incorporated into the shoe.
Manufacturing: a guarantee of quality and ethics
For leather, favour workshops audited for their expertise, with manufacturing made in Europe where possible: this is a good benchmark in your search for more responsible options, with genuine ethical standards and respect for working conditions. 80% of leathers in the world are chrome-tanned, which reinforces the appeal of more demanding alternatives. By comparison, French tanneries comply with strict environmental standards. If the model incorporates cork, this earth-derived material also highlights the value of well-utilised natural resources. Some brands use, for example, REACH-certified chrome VI-free leather and also offer alternatives based on grape marc, with materials such as grape and maize leather. The place of manufacture, the stated commitments and the possibility of repairing or recycling products are also good indicators.
Versatility for a lighter wardrobe
The versatility of your sneakers is also an essential criterion. A pair capable of adapting to different uses and a wide range of outfits will naturally have a greater chance of being worn for a long time. Timeless colours such as white, beige, navy or khaki pair easily with jeans, chinos or smarter trousers. By favouring understated, well-designed models, you limit the need to multiply purchases while maintaining a varied wardrobe. This ability to transcend seasons, trends and everyday occasions is often one of the best indicators of durability.
FAGUO, an eco-responsible approach since 2009
Since 2009, FAGUO has developed a comprehensive vision of eco-responsible fashion, grounded in genuine research into materials, manufacturing and product life cycles. The objective is not limited to incorporating recycled materials into its new sneakers: the brand also acts on measuring carbon emissions, product circularity and the transparency of its commitments in favour of ethical fashion, in keeping with social commitments.
Measuring and reducing our carbon footprint
FAGUO carries out a full carbon assessment every year to precisely measure emissions linked to its activity, as part of an ethical fashion approach. On average, 21.5 kg of CO2 is emitted per pair of eco-responsible sneakers. At FAGUO, it is worth noting that sneakers have a carbon footprint of up to around 12 kg of CO2, and for the most responsible collections, around 7 kg of CO2.
This approach rests on several complementary pillars to reduce environmental impact at every stage of the product life cycle. The place of manufacture also matters: production in France respects ethical working conditions, limits the carbon footprint related to transport and supports the French social model.
Contributing to carbon neutrality through reforestation
Since its founding, FAGUO has contributed to reforestation projects in France. Since 2009, more than 3.5 million trees have already been planted in forests certified by the Label Bas Carbone. These forests, owned by FAGUO, are maintained by a recognised French nurseryman who plants species suited to the type of territory.
Forests to reconnect and open our eyes to our impact. This contribution logic is part of a broader vision of reducing carbon emissions, with trees being the main drivers of this effort.
Guiding our customers towards circular fashion
Circular fashion is an integral part of the FAGUO approach. The brand develops collection, repair, recycling and second-hand solutions to extend the lifespan of products. For example, a defect may sometimes be found on a pair of eco-responsible sneakers. In that case, FAGUO offers repair, either through dedicated workshops or by reimbursing the craftsperson who carries out the repair. This is to avoid needlessly discarding a pair that could be reused, and thus contribute to reducing waste.
The Seconde Vie programme makes usable clothing available rather than systematically producing new items. It is available in stores through the provision of pre-owned products sold at a lower price than new ones. This helps contribute to a more responsible consumption model.
A transparent brand, Entreprise à Mission and B Corp
FAGUO also relies on verifiable commitments and independent labels. The brand is an Entreprise à Mission and B Corp certified, with audits carried out every 2 and 3 years, to confirm or challenge their statuses. These two recognitions evaluate social and environmental impacts in a comprehensive way.
A mission report is produced at the time of the Entreprise à Mission certification audit and can be consulted on our website for more information.
The carbon footprint is displayed on our product pages so that everyone can better understand the impact of the items they buy.
FAQ about eco-responsible sneakers
What is the environmental impact of a pair of sneakers?
A classic pair of sneakers can generate 20 kilos of CO2 during its manufacture, largely due to synthetic materials, transport and industrial processes. Production can also require significant water and petrochemical resource consumption. To reduce this impact, eco-responsible sneakers favour recycled materials, more durable components and greater transparency on carbon emissions. At FAGUO, the carbon footprint is displayed on every product page.
How do you recognise a truly eco-responsible sneaker brand?
A committed brand communicates clearly about the materials used, its manufacturing process and its environmental objectives. In France, 47% of the 24 million pairs of shoes produced are sneakers. Independent labels such as B Corp or the Entreprise à Mission status also provide additional guarantees. It is also important to check whether commitments are quantified and measurable: displayed carbon emissions, share of recycled materials or concrete actions on product circularity.
How does FAGUO's commitment to forests work?
Since 2009, FAGUO has been contributing to tree-planting projects in France to help achieve carbon neutrality. More than 3.5 million trees have already been planted in forests certified by the Label Bas Carbone. This approach is also accompanied by circularity initiatives such as collection, repair, recycling and second-hand resale to extend the lifespan of products.
Are FAGUO sneakers vegan?
Some FAGUO models are vegan when they contain no animal materials, including sneakers made from recycled polyester and canvas. Other models use leather or suede. Detailed information about the materials used is provided directly on each product page to help you choose the model that suits your expectations.
How do you care for your eco-responsible sneakers to make them last?
To extend the lifespan of your sneakers, apply a waterproofing spray before first use. Then clean them with a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush to preserve the materials and the comfort of your feet. Avoid the tumble dryer or direct heat sources and let them dry naturally in the open air. Alternating between several pairs also helps limit daily wear and maintain their comfort for longer.
