We compensate for our CO2 emissions

A tree planted for each piece manufactured

As a pioneer since 2009, the year it was founded, FAGUO has been measuring, reducing and compensating for its CO2 emissions since the company began.

The first FAGUO forests are now over 12 years old while new ones are started in France each year during planting season (October-May).

Today, 300 FAGUO forests grow in France totaling almost 2 million trees.

Having an impact on the climate as little as possible means concretely reducing the CO2 emissions of FAGUO pieces over time. We have kept our word: on the average, each FAGUO piece emits 50% less CO2 than it did 10 years ago.

Aware that zero impact doesn’t exist, we plant a FAGUO tree for every piece we manufacture to compensate for the remaining CO2 emissions - and even more.

“Planting a tree is not a mundane action. Trees create life.”

Our best ally against climate change

On one hand, a FAGUO tree, in its lifetime, absorbs the equivalent of 1,000 kilos of CO2eq. On the other hand, a piece manufactured by FAGUO, depending on its size, can emit between 1 kilo CO2eq (for a belt) and 40 kg CO2eq (for a wool jacket).

In 2020, FAGUO trees absorbed 16,440 tons of CO2eq or 6 times more than the FAGUO company’s emissions in the same year.

Beyond the brand’s carbon neutrality, FAGUO contributes to the world’s carbon neutrality.

Who plants FAGUO’s trees?

Planting and maintaining a plantation is the work of an expert.

From the beginning, we have been accompanied by NAUDET Pépinières, a nursery that has existed in France for 50 years.

After having defined the number of trees FAGUO has to plant for the year, NAUDET calls for forest projects, based on specifications defined with FAGUO, to respect the diversity of French forests.

How does this work?

Private property owners or local communities with specific projects postulate and FAGUO pays for all the plants. A three-way contract is written up that defines the rules to be followed:

  • good maintenance of the forest so it grows peacefully
  • installation of FAGUO identifying wood panels
  • respecting the code of good forest practices
  • permission to take photos and communicate about FAGUO’s support

The nurseryman

Established in most of the French regions, our trusted partner NAUDET Pépinières understands the challenges of forests in France and follows the forest guide to the letter to manage forests sustainably.

The project

  • Afforestation: land or agricultural wasteland, a wooded strip, an orchard, a full plot or only for enrichment ...
  • Reforestation: after fire, after illness, after exploitation ...
  • An agroforestry project: using the tree to support an agricultural project

The essences

They are chosen according to regions, climates, their characteristics and projects.

FAGUO respects forest diversity (60% deciduous / 40% conifer) most of the plots are in multi-cultivation.

Mulching

It limits competition between young plants and other plants over a period of 2 to 3 years and maintains climatic and agronomic conditions favorable to the development of young trees.

The plantation

From September to May during the vegetative rest period.

During this rest, it is the roots of the tree that work: the sap goes down into the roots. Now is the right time to root the seedlings after preparing the soil.

Protection

In order to thrive, plants need to be taken care of and regular maintenance is necessary if you are to ever have a beautiful forest.

The FAGUO panel

To recognize a FAGUO forest, a wooden sign is planted at the entrance to each forest. All FAGUO forests can be geolocated from the forest map on faguo.fr.

An immersion in the forest 1 hour away from each large city

Each FAGUO piece is designed to have a full life in either the city or the forest. The graphic codes of each collection help reveal the true nature of woodsmen OR fans of the forest whose social and professional lives are in fact extremely urban. To answer the call of nature, technical pieces, omnipresent in the collection, can be used for city bike-riding yet also meet the requirements of forest living.

As soon as a piece is manufactured, a tree is planted in a FAGUO forest that anyone can visit. FAGUO organizes FAGUO Bike & Forest cocktail parties for immersions in the forest not far from each major city.

Natural filter

They act as air filters against pollution. Their leaves have the particularity of capturing pollutants and limiting their circulation, thus purifying the air we breathe. Trees with hairy leaves, such as birches, are particularly effective in this mission.

Purify the water

Trees act like miniature wastewater treatment plants thanks to their root systems. They filter out heavy metals (the main pollutants in water) and other pollutants such as phosphates and nitrates.

Protects against natural disasters

Flood: absorbs water, increases its penetration into the soil, is a natural barrier to its runoff with its humus and leaves on the ground.

Drought: restores permeability to soils and thus facilitates the water cycle.

Slows down soil erosion

By limiting runoff, they structure landscapes and protect them from certain phenomena that can damage them. They are also definite brakes against the erosive action of the wind. For example: the dunes on the wild Atlantic coast in France.

By providing shelter, protection or food, they are thus an essential cog in the preservation of ecosystems and animal species all over the world. We recommend that you watch Our Planet on Netflix to find out more.

Plant to grow

Agroforestry, which consists in particular of making trees coexist with agricultural crops, allows agricultural yields to be increased in a purely natural way. FAGUO supports farmers with several projects of this type.

Ubiquitous

Trees are everywhere. They provide us with wood, a noble material, necessary for the manufacture of our furniture, our frames… We cannot materially do without it. Managing forests well is therefore a priority.

They feed us!

Trees and their fruits are very present on our plates! We can feast on apples, pears, cherries, plums or nuts and therefore emit less CO2 by reducing our consumption of meat, in particular.

A tree’s foliage is nourished by sunlight. This allows for photosynthesis: the leaf absorbs CO2 and replaces it by emitting oxygen. When the leaves fall off the tree, they create a living ecosystem at the base of the tree.

The branches and leaves develop from springtime until the end of summer. They grow from buds into leaves that have the largest possible surface to absorb the sun’s rays.

The trunk is the primary branch of the tree. It passes water and minerals from the roots to the branches thanks to its strength and stature. It also transports sugar down from the leaves to the roots. Its core is referred to as heartwood.

Besides anchoring the tree in the ground, the roots draw water and nutritive elements from the soil. The tree is a local purification station for the earth. The roots develop during the autumn and winter when the tree loses its leaves.
