Thanks to our carbon balance, we understood that primal materials, essential to our activity, represented 50% of the carbon emissions of FAGUO in 2015. With this is conclusion, we worked to progress and manage our primal materials in a better way. We think that the best option for the following years is to include recycled materials at the heart of our collections, from textile to shoes but on our bags too.
FAGUO VISION: TO PRODUCE LESS BUT RE-USING WHAT IS ALREADY PRODUCED
FAGUO want to reduce its CO2 emissions related to primal materials. The brand prefer to use recycled materials rather than using new ones. This is concretely the best option, the less dangerous one for the planet.
To understand this, here are few figure showing the progression margin concerning recycled materials. The example of the shoes in France.
In average, French people use to buy 400 millions of pair of shoes. Each year this corresponds to more of 6 pairs per habitant. 300 millions pairs are threw away each year. 10% of the wasted shoes are collected to be sorted : ¾ are still in a good situation.
Most of the time, the rest goes to the basket and isn’t recycled. Moreover, textile is in the same situation because the majority of the materials are threw away while it could be re-used.
It’s why we try to re-use the primal materials since the beginning of the process of the creation instead of creating new ones. We control the volumetric production to produce the exact quantity that we will sell. In this spirit, our sales are moderated and come at the end of the collection. We do this to empty our stock.
CONCRETELY, HOW FAGUO WILL ACT IN THE FOLLOWING IDEAS?
In 2019, the first production with recycled polyester is born, with a basketball model, and 60% of the composition of the shoes. Bags of this collections are fully made with polyester coming from plastic bottles. On partnerships, FAGUO start to propose textile made with cotton assemblage and recycled polyester (50/50). A good example of this approach is the SCOPITONE Festival in September 19, with dedicated T-shirts for the festival in Nantes.
In 2020, the use of recycled materials will continue to expend on the textile and luggage. We settled the goal of 100% of our collections partly made with recycled materials by 2024.
IS THERE ANY LIMIT FOR RECYCLED MATERIALS? YES.
When FAGUO create a product, made it, transporting it, or distribute it we do everything we can to avoid CO2 emissions. It must respect a quality charter ( comfort, design, resistance,..) to allows our client to be satisfied of every new item, and that’s why our products keep a good form threw the years.
Sometimes, recycled materials do not allow to find a good balance to fill two missions on the same time. For example, a T-shirt made with a 100% recycled cotton can’t be produced because it will be to fragile. In this case, our approach will be false as it will go against our values, we want our products to live longer. That’s why we work on recycled products mixed with new resources to guarantee the solidity of the product, but also a decreasing carbon footprint for our product.
Following years will bring out many issues to us, as we will have to work on new projects and models to find the perfect balance between fashion tendencies and sustainability of the products through the time.
